After running in 3rd place for almost all the race, a horror pit stop in the Ferrari garage left Vettel in 4th place with a challenge to catch and pass Massa for a podium position. Vettel was unable to achieve this and it raises a question: Has Williams closed the gap to Ferrari.
It's still clear that Ferrari have better race pace but the gap between them and Williams has seemed to decrease. Earlier on in the season, Ferrari beat Williams by a long shot each race. That's obviously not the case now! Obviously, the track in Austria is the shortest on the calendar in terms of time so all the cars are closer together but there is still a noticeable difference.
On a longer and faster track, such as Silverstone (the next race), we will see the true gap between the two teams. With less downforce, Williams may be further behind in the corners but their car is very fast in a straight line. There should be a close battle until the end of the season for 2nd place in the constructors championship.
Whilst Williams are catching Ferrari, Ferrari are catching Mercedes. You know what this should bring; a three way team fight for a few wins towards the end of the season. Let's hope we get a lot of different winners! That is, of course, if Mercedes don't develop faster than Ferrari and Williams.
We need to see more drivers battling for race wins. Don't get me wrong, it's exciting to see Rosberg and Hamilton fight wheel to wheel, but how often does that happen? Nearly never! All drivers from Mercedes, Ferrari and Williams are capable of wining races, but only if the car is capable. Let's hope we get good fights...it's been long enough!
