It's no secret that Lotus F1 team are currently struggling financially are would be facing a possible shutdown if it weren't for Renault stepping in, showing a strong interest in buying the team. Simply, if Renault buy into Lotus they'll 'save the day' and hopefully bring them back to a winning team again.
There's plenty of talk about Lotus struggling to stay running, but their 7th and 8th finishing positions at the Japanese GP last weekend proved they can still be competitive without a big budget. Just imagine what they could do with a budget brought by Renault.
Lotus have their own struggles and so do Renault; Red Bull haven't been pleased with their Renault engine all season and have stopped using them. They've even said 'it's a Ferrari engine or no engine' strongly showing their dissatisfaction for the power unit. Big improvements must be made to the power unit before they can even think of being in contention for regular podiums but it could happen eventually.
Being a works team is a great advantage too since all the data on the car is looked at by one big team instead of the factory and the engine supplier. Also, a works team has the advantage of building the engine around the chassis, instead of building the chassis around the engine.
We have to remember that the deal isn't done yet; Renault have only sent a letter to Lotus stating their intention of buying into the team but it seems pretty much set in stone.
